James Oberweis the "Ice Cream Fuhrer" lost the nomination for the Republican gubernatorial candidate to Topinka in Tuesdays elections. During his campaign Oberweis who is a dairy businessman was known for being xenophobic and anti-choice. Recently at one of the Oberweis Dairy plants several undocumented Mexican workers were turned over to the authorities by their employers after being fired. In Cook County there were problems with integrating the electronic voting machines and the ballots cast in Chicago are being counted by hand with lawyers from the Stroger campaign and the Claypool campaign arguing over who got what votes, similar to the Gore/Bush spectacle in 2000. Meanwhile, Illinois may have had the lowest voter turnout in its history with only 25% of registered voters actually voting in the elections. This low turnout is thought to have happened because of an unmotivated electorate and a snowstorm downstate.
