Important Public Hearing: Monday, February 13, 7PM, Dvorak Park Field house, 1119 W. Cullerton
There are only 4 days left until Pilsen and Little Village and all Chicagoans will have a chance to make an impact on cleaning up the deadly pollution that comes from Chicago's Fisk and Crawford old coal-fired power plants.
A coalition of community groups and residents in conjunction with elected officials will be holding an important Public Hearing in Pilsen to allow residents living near Chicago's two old coal-fired power plants to learn more about and express their views on how to control the pollution from these and other coal-fired power plants in Illinois.
This hearing is a vital opportunity for residents most affected by these plants - including residents in Pilsen and Little Village - to voice their opinions about how the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago should regulate the toxic pollution from the Fisk and Crawford and other coal-fired power plants in Illinois.
Illinois is currently reviewing new ways to regulate Coal Plant emissions to meet Federal requirements.
There are three key opportunities for residents in Chicago to shape policy regarding the toxic pollution that is emitted from the Fisk and Crawford plants:
· Mercury Rules: Governor Blagojevich, through Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), is currently writing rules that will curb the emissions of mercury
· Clean Air Interstate Rules (CAIR) rules: the IEPA is also writing rules that will curb noxious sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide
· Chicago Clean Power Ordinance: this is a proposed Chicago Ordinance that would require a clean up of emissions from Fisk and Crawford by at least 66%.
