Anti-war activist Not Guilty says the Jury!

12/16/06, Patricia Vogel, mother of an Iraqi war veteran and member of Military Families Speak Out, was found not guilty of disorderly conduct as a result of her arrest at the anti-war demonstration on 3/19/05.
A jury found that Patricia Vogel was not guilty of disorderly conduct after a two day trial. Ms. Vogel, active in Military Families Speak Out and an active opponent of the war in Iraq, was arrested on March 19, 2005, as she was standing on Oak Street carrying a sign that said Troops Home. The arresting officers testified unconvincingly that Ms. Vogel was standing on Michigan Avenue, and one of them testified that Ms. Vogel yelled to demonstrators to disobey the police order to disperse. Deputy Chief Killackey testified that he gave three orders to disperse, all before Ms. Vogel arrived. Sara Burtis, a law student and member of the National Lawyers Guild, testified that she saw Ms. Vogel standing with her sign on Oak street. Ms. Vogel movingly testified that her sons experiences in Iraq forced her to take action to oppose this unjust war.

The jury deliberated for 1 and 1/2 hours and then returned with a unanimous verdict of not guilty.
