Petition To Reopen Public Housing In New Orleans

All but a handful of the habitable public housing units in New Orleans have been closed since Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29. This petition demands that local and national authorities reopen habitable public housing in New Orleans immediately
STOP HANO AND HUD FROM HOLDING THE HOMES OF 32,000 NEW ORLEANIANS HOSTAGE!

The decision by the Housing Authority of New Orleans(HANO) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development(HUD) to not reopen the vast majority of the Crescent City’s habitable public housing units is a major contributing factor to the dire shortage of affordable housing in Louisiana’s largest city. This action by HUD and HANO is clearly intended to purge thousands of working class African-Americans from New Orleans. We condemn this act for what it is- ethnic and class cleansing. It must be stopped now!

WE DEMAND:
1. That the management of HANO order the immediate reopening of all habitable public housing units in New Orleans, including the Iberville complex.
2. That the federal government promptly begin the rebuilding of those public housing units in New Orleans that are currently uninhabitable.
3. That HANO and HUD restore the number of low income public housing units in N.O. to their 1995 level of 14,000 units in a manner that addresses the needs, desires and culture of those being housed.
