Veterans and veterans-to-be should not be used and misused by the government and others for illegal and unjust wars such as the war in Iraq today. The government should not be promoting the militarization of youth and military programs in the schools, such as the Rickover Naval Academy (RNA) that has been forced into Senn High School, despite the opposition of the community, parents, teachers, students, and others.
We say money for teaching critical thinking, not for training in killing. We say, “RNA, Float Away!” We say not to the militarization of the public schools and Chicago’s role in having the most militarized school system in the nation.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7th at 10:30am “We don’t want military programs taking over our community high school” say neighborhood activists.
Opponents of the Rickover Naval Academy at Senn HS will picket the RNA’s opening ceremony on Monday, November 7th. The protest begins at 10:30 AM in front of Senn, 5900 N. Glenwood Ave though we will move around to the back of the school. The event is expected to draw military and Board of Education officials as well as over 50 protestors. Last year, the Chicago Board of Education voted to open the naval academy at Senn High School, despite determined opposition from the community, parents, teachers, and students. RNA has continued to be a target for anti-military protest, drawing over 10 military school opponents during a stop from Cindy Sheehan’s national bus tour in September. In addition, a city-wide Veterans Day protest against the war and militarization of schools will target the Rickover Naval Academy as well
