China-US to Hold New Round of Textile Talks

China-US to Hold New Round of Textile Talks
Beijing, Oct 8(Prensa Latina) Next week in the Chinese capital, China and the US will have their 6th meeting over the textile dispute, with still no sign of solution.

A Trade Ministry statement released on Saturday announced negotiations will take place October 12-13, but it did not provide details on the composition and heads of the delegations.

The five previous rounds, held alternately in China and the US, concluded without reaching agreement, and although the parties said they had made headway toward reconciling differing points of view during the latest round, essential disagreements remain.

The coming meeting was preceded by remarks by a Chinese Trade Ministry spokesman Thursday, who urged the US government to be cautious and act appropriately.

He was referring to a statement by the US Committee to Implement Textile Agreements (CIAT) about imposing restrictions on another 21 categories of Chinese textiles and garments.

The Chinese spokesman said such US action is contrary to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and would add to the blockade of another 21 categories of Chinese textiles Washington imposed early this year.

The US and Europe are applying protectionist measures to hinder the expansion of the strong Chinese textile industry and that of other developing exporting countries.

The US attitude, whose real objective is considered to be re-imposition of import quotas using subterfuge, has meant great losses for Chinese entrepreneurs.

Sources from the sector said sales to the US have decreased between two and three billion dollars in the first eight months of this year.
