Katrina Aftermath: Witnesses Needed

Dear friends,

The questions raised in this article, by Davis and Fontenot, merit a Congressional investigation.

Everyone who has gone South to report on the aftermath of Katrina and Rita has returned with valuable information that was not made available through media outlets.

When Rev. Jesse Jackson returned from his visit to the disaster area, it immediately became clear that nothing less than ethnic cleansing was unfolding in this thumb-twiddling non-response.

Michael Moore, who was received by Plenty volunteers who were already on hand, reported "bodies everywhere" in the vicinity of Lake Pontchartrain, which can only mean a massive cover-up as the bodies were silently disposed, oaths of secrecy extracted, and martial law enforced by highly paid American corporate death squads.

Now the survivors are being quietly spirited away, in an American diaspora that will probably result in years of homelessness for the vast majority of them.

It is what we do not know that is far more important than what we already do. Yes, friends of Bush are already on the scene like vultures with no-bid contracts and $250,000-limit credit cards directly linked to the national treasury. Meanwhile, the few credit cards that were issued to survivors were immediately revoked.

While New Orleans is rebuilt into a theme park, the survivors will never return to their homes. This is the new American racism at work, minus the lynch mobs but equally as deadly.

I live in Gary, Ind., a city experiencing the same sort of ethnic cleansing, under the rubric of "Gentrification." No plan whatsoever is made for the poor, mostly Black, population.

Rev. Geri Solomon, who is my wife, has worked on issues regarding homeless people since Ronald Reagan created this category in America (she has also worked on many other causes and managed Dennis Kucinich's Illinois campaign last year). She is alarmed and concerned about finding out the truth about the violent social aftermath of Katrina, and is planning to tour the disaster area, along with me.

We want to know what is really happening to the survivors in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. What are people really thinking? Where will they end up? We must never permit tens of thousands of Americans to be added to the ranks of the homeless as a result of this social catastrophe.

Rather, we should use this opportunity to eliminate this humiliating blight on American civilization from our social life. In the wake of the hurricane is the best place to begin to eradicate Ronald Reagan’s obscene legacy, homelessness.

After we return, we will establish a permanent watchdog committee to track the Bush Administration’s legacy of violence against the survivors of Katrina & Rita’s destructive force. Any who are in sympathy with this effort and would like to help, please send contributions to:
