Panel on Censorship and Freedom of the Campus Press, Fri. Sept. 16 at 1pm

Plaintiffs in Hosty v. Carter Case to Discuss Freedom of the Campus Press on Fri. Sept 16
On Friday, September 16, plaintiffs Margaret Hosty and Jeni Porche will discuss the Hosty v. Carter case as part of a panel at Columbia College in downtown Chicago.

The panel on “Censorship and the Student Press: The Hosty v. Carter Case” will be held Friday, September 16 at 1pm in the Columbia College library, 3rd floor East, at 624 S. Michigan Ave. The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Independent Press Association’s Campus Journalism Project (www.indypress.org/cjp) and the Columbia College Department of Journalism.

“Hosty v. Carter may be the worst decision for college student rights in the history of the federal judiciary,” noted John K. Wilson, coordinator of the Campus Journalism Project. The case deals with the Innovator student newspaper at Governors State University in the south suburbs of Chicago. The Innovator ceased publication in 2000 after administrators demanded prior review of its content. This summer, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that college administrators have the right to censor student-run newspapers.

Panelists for the event include:

Margaret Hosty, former managing editor of the Innovator.

Jeni Porche, former editor-in-chief of the Innovator and an alum of Columbia College.

John K. Wilson, coordinator of the Campus Journalism Project and the author of the forthcoming book, “Patriotic Correctness: Academic Freedom and Its Enemies” (Paradigm, 2006).
