2005 Chicago Air Show Pics
Pictures from the August 2005 Chicago Air and Water Show, sponsored by Shell Oil. Since becoming a peace activist, whenever I see or hear these weapons of mass destruction, I am filled with dread as my mind thinks of the many civilians in places such as Latin America, Vietnam, and Iraq that have lived in terror and death because of our country's greed.

This is a carnival type ride that the U.S. Navy brings around the country which mostly attracts children. It's purpose is to glamorize the killing machines, and to desensitize us into accepting their existance.

This is a demonstration cockpit, which again, attracted many children. The city of Chicago has billed the Air and Water Show as a 'Family Event'.

I had an interesting discussion with the Civil Air Patrol cadet on the right. He said that he's learned a lot being in the CAP, a military-aligned program, such as self-discipline. For high schoolers, as he is, there's not much else offered aside from sports. I asked him what he would do if he found himself serving in a war he didn't believe in. He took the question seriously, expressed that going AWOL would get one in a lot of trouble, but he supposed if you just shut up and do your job, the war will get over that much faster.
I didnt want to respond, because I knew I would have come off preachy. I do respect him, hes involved in a service organization; they primarily help with civilian search and rescue. Im glad hes found something to be a part of, rather than wasting away on video games. I think what I do want to say is a prayer that we each can have the awareness and strength to do the right things, and to refuse participation in the things that destroy life.
Being a peace activist, when I heard these jets flying overhead, I felt dread. I felt the dread of all the poor people who have been at the receiving end. Victims of wars are 90% civilians. I think of the 100,000 plus dead Iraqi civilians. So, it filled me with great sadness that so many people should come out and watch these angels of death, and view them as entertainment. They are not benign.
Each of these weapons of mass destruction represent resources stolen from those most in need in our society. From underpaid workers, to schools without resources, this misappropriation of funds are a symptom of a sick society.
A revealing photoessay that illustrates how our country has used these tools can be found here.
