PROTEST AGAINST EDDIE BAUER!
INDONESIAN WORKER IN CHICAGO TO DEMAND
COMPANY MEET COURT-ORDERED OBLIGATION
Company's Supplier Flees from $1 Million in
Back Wages & Severance Owed Garment Workers
WHERE: EDDIE BAUER STORE AT 600 N. MICHIGAN AVENUE, CHICAGO
WHEN: 1:30 PM, SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 2005
Hundreds of students affiliated with the national university-based labor rights federation, United Students Against Sweatshops, Chicago area trade unionists, and labor rights activists will join an Indonesian garment worker who has traveled from Jakarta to Chicago to demand that the Eddie Bauer company pay the back wages and severance due 875 Indonesian workers who sewed men's and women's casual ware sold by the U.S. sportswear retailer. Nearly two years ago, a major Eddie Bauer supplier, Hong-Kong based Joseph Pang, closed his Indonesian factory, PT Victoria, without notice and fled the country shortly after workers completed a twenty-four hour shift devoted to sewing and shipping garments to Bauer in the U.S.
An Indonesian court ruled that the company was obligated under Indonesian law to pay back wages and severance totaling $1 million to the workers. Bauer's supplier has so far refused to comply, causing great hardship for the company's former employees and their families. Eddie Bauer's statement of corporate policy claims that the company takes responsibility for ensuring that its suppliers follow all local laws. To date, Bauer has refused to implement this policy, and continues to do business with Pang's factory in Cambodia.
