THE TRUTH ABOUT BOLIVIA

forum: THE TRUTH ABOUT BOLIVIA
Mass Revolt Topples U.S.-Backed President
7pm, Thursday, June 23
Room 305, Harold Washington College
30 E. Lake Street, Downtown Chicago

One June 6, 2005, mass protests in Bolivia forced the resignation of Bolivian president Carlos Mesa. At the heart of these demonstrations is the demand by ordinary Bolivians to exercise control over their country's natural resources, namely their substantial oil and gas reserves.

Former President Mesa and his government are supporters of a neo-liberal "free trade" agenda that involved handing control (and profit from) the country's natural resources to transnational corporations.

Protesters, including urban and rural workers, neighborhood associations, unemployed workers, and indigenous groups are calling for nationalization of Bolivia's resources and for the formation of a democratic Constituent Assembly, to represent the true will of Bolivia's people.

Come to this forum of the International Socialist Organization to discuss the historic events unfolding today throughout Latin America. Bolivia's fight contains important lessons for our struggle here in the United States against corporate dominance and U.S. imperialism.

Sponsored by the Loop Branch of the International Socialist Organization and the HWC Socialist Club.
