CFL ALERT: ASK YOUR REPRESENTATIVES FOR GUARANTEES THAT U.S. WELFARE TO ISRAEL WILL NOT BE SPENT ON FUNDING ILLEGAL SETTLEMENT ACTIVITY.

Israeli attorney, Talia Sasson has written a damning report about the financing of illegal settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. The report recommends that criminal investigations take place against several members of the government who acted as agents of the settlers, not the Israeli government. Accused members of the Israeli government are claiming that knowledge of illegal settlement activity went all the way to the top and that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon approved and initiated many of the projects to build and sustain illegal settlements. Please take a moment to send our letter or write your own to your representatives and ask that they demand accountability from the Israeli government. Tell them that American tax payer money not be spent on criminal settlement activity in the West Bank and Gaza.

TALKING POINTS:
*Tell your representatives that you are outraged that congress supports cuts in food programs for the poor as an alternative to President Bush's idea to cut billions from the payments that go to large farming operations and that you believe cuts should occur in the $12 billion that the U.S. provides in welfare to Israel.

*Tell your representatives that their bias is apparent as so many congressmen opposed funding to the Palestinian Authority after the Palestinians held democratic elections but that they have not said a word about the Sasson Report, which was commissioned at the request of Washington. Ask your representatives what they have not demanded accountability from the Israeli government and that you support reductions in welfare to Israel until they can prove that American money is not being spent on criminal settlement activity.

FINDINGS FROM THE SASSON REPORT
The report charges that the pattern of consistent law-breaking in Israel needs to end immediately in order to change the “continual, blunt and institutional breach of law, executed by the institutions of the state themselves."

-At least 105 illegal outposts were built without government authorization since the Oslo period. Of those over a dozen were built entirely on land privately owned by Palestinians and "are totally illegal and must be removed."

-Seven outposts are on disputed land, 26 are on land in the West Bank claimed by the Israeli state and 39 are on parcels that include private Palestinian property.

-Six illegal outposts were ordered by the courts to have been dismantled long ago but have not been dismantled because the Ministry of Defense has not issued orders to do so.

*Tell your representatives that the international standing of the U.S. has suffered dramatically because we have a consistent record of supporting the most extreme and criminal elements of the Israeli government. Ask your representatives to put their personal biases aside and to support policies that benefit American interests here and abroad. The illegal expansion of settlements and the crimes and violations of human rights against Palestinians that occur because of the Israeli system of apartheid do nothing but harm American interests in every corner of the world. It is absurd to continue unchecked support of Israel. Remind your representatives that they have a moral obligation to distance Americans from Israeli crimes. We can no longer afford to be allied with the system of Zionist apartheid in the consciousness of the world.
