“The Voice of the Poor: Remembering the Life of Romero”

Thursday, March 14, 2005
6pm dinner, 7:15-8:30pm reflection

The Su Casa Catholic Worker community invites you to celebrate the life of Monsenor Oscar Romero on the 25th anniversary of his death. Monsenor Romero was a Catholic priest in El Salvador who spoke out on behalf of poor farmers in his country, inspiring them and people around the world by his example. He was assassinated by a military sniper while he was saying mass in the moment he was consecrating the wine and bread.

As a young man, Monsenor Romero studied in Rome to become a priest. He returned to El Salvador and began practicing very conservative views. His views changed radically when his friend Father Rutilio Grande, S.J., was assassinated in 1978 by the military. Romero was inspired by Rutilio Grande’s example of organizing and working in solidarity with the landless, oppressed farmers of his parish.

Mario Valle, a member of the Su Casa community, will lead our reflection. Mario grew up in El Salvador, where he was a member of a Christian base community during the civil war. Since coming to the U.S. in 2003 with his family, Mario has continued working for human rights.

Please join us on March 14th to share a meal, learn together, celebrate the Easter spirit, and pray in honor of Monsenor Romero. RSVPs appreciated but not necessary. All are welcome.

“The church has put itself on the side of the poor and has assumed their defense.
This means that the church incarnates itself in the world of the poor, proclaims
a good news, gives hope, inspires a liberating praxis, defends the cause of
the poor and participates in their destiny.
- Oscar Arnulfo Romero
