CPSR/Chicago brings a presentation and discussion of Privaterra -- privacy and security for nonprofits using the internet.
Wednesday, March 23, 7:30pm
Room 803 at DePaul Law School
25 E Jackson Blvd, Chicago
Nonprofits are increasingly using technology as an integral tool in capturing, producing and communicating a wide array of information.
Unfortunately, the enormous potential of these technologies coincides with greater risk. Not only is there an upsurge in surveillance and interception of online communications by many governments; users are also plagued by an explosion in computer viruses, unsolicited junk mail (spam) and other threats to their online privacy. In fact, it is precisely as nonprofits become more dependent on using technology in
their work that they are at their most vulnerable.
Robert Guerra will talk about Privaterra's recent work -- implementing privacy and security technology, technological education and support in
central and southern America, central Asia and central Africa. He will also present details of a new project whose aim it is to produce a guide for Human Rights Organizations of existing privacy enhancing technologies could be be used to secure communications and protect data.
A brief meeting of CPSR/Chicago -- the Chicago chapter of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibiity -- will be held prior to the presentation. For information, contact
