The politics of Malcolm X
February 21 marks 40 years since the assassination of Malcolm X. The mainstream media and politicians will invoke the legacy of Malcolm X—but say little about his radical commitment to fighting racism and injustice. Establishment figures who treat Malcolm X as a saint want to bury his legacy of revolutionary internationalism and opposition to U.S. imperialism.
"I'm not an American," he once said. "I'm one of the 22 million Black people who are the victims of Americanism. One of the 22 million Black people who are the victims of democracy... So I'm not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag-saluter... I don't see any American dream. I see an American nightmare."
Come to this forum with International Socialist Review editor AHMED SHAWKI to discuss what lessons Malcolm’s fight against racism and injustice hold for us today—and what that legacy means for building a new struggle against the injustices of the United States both at home and abroad.
