Pilsen "American" Girl

Information pertaining to any "American" girl or boy for that matter is based on consumer culture as is the national pride is as our culture, the "American way." We buy innovated idols or other imagery dolled for illusion and structure lost or currently being taken from cultural memory.

Though, I am aghast by this figure, I must say that I was born and raised in Pilsen and completely disagree with the notion of a violent neighborhood. All neighborhoods have their violence and dismay and the suburbs have much to shock the white flight as that from the past decades. This flight comes back to us. In Pilsen we have a growing rate of substitute (wealthier) inhabitants and it feels more like a neighborhood motel than it is a community. From this brown flight (if I may) comes not just the disillusioned "American Dream" to running to the suburbs, but it creates the opportunities for these substitutes to claim specific areas in the city that are ideal for profit, such as the Pilsen neighborhood.

The doll represents a paradigm shift to the same locality and start as that of when in the 1950’s and before was for Latinos in Chicago, a stalemate. When it comes down to it, my people are not profitable until subjected to become something safe and consumable. In turn we are consumed under the industrial agenda of assimilation, which is a result for having such dolls created.
