OPEN Planning Meeting for 3/19/05 Protest(s)

March 19th marks the second anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Not only does the war continue, but important civil liberties issues remain in the balance, from racial profiling to illegal police action against demonstrators.

At least 100,000 Iraqis, Americans and others have lost their lives due to the invasion, and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of children and adults are being maimed physically and psychologically for life. And that is just the direct human price of occupation. The indirect costs include attacks on social services, with the right to affordable healthcare and a dignified retirement on the leading edge of the budget ax.

To suppress growing dissent over these and other issues, the right to express 1st amendments freedoms to assemble and protest are under steady assault at both federal and local levels. The City of Chicago's wholesale arrest of hundreds on the evening of March 20th, 2003 took place against a backdrop where Presidential motorcades can only be met by fawning supporters and racial profiling is now "legitimate" public policy.

To oppose war and occupation, and to defend our freedoms, we call upon all Chicago area progressive forces to meet in an open planning meeting later this month to democratically discuss and begin organizing a unified response on the 2nd anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The meeting will be at

2-5 PM
Saturday, January 29th
The DePaul Center, 11th Floor cafeteria
1 E. Jackson (Jackson & State), Chicago

We apologize in advance if the time of this meeting conflicts with an already-scheduled function of your group or organization, and ask, if possible, that you find a way to send a representative(s) to it.

Thank you.
