Wed. Dec. 8: THE BATTLE FOR CHICAGO SCHOOLS

Public education in Chicago is under attack. What can we do to fight back?
Battle4Schools.pdf
PUBLIC EDUCATION IN CHICAGO IS UNDER ATTACK! The Chicago City Colleges tried to ram through a concessionary contract for faculty and staff that would have undermined the City Colleges—until the union stood up and beat them back.
Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is trying to do the same thing—and teachers there have gone out on strike.
Chicago Public Schools are pushing the union-busting privatization plan, “Renaissance 2010” which would shut down dozens of schools across Chicago, and militarize Senn High School with a Naval Academy.
But people aren’t taking this without a fight. From Senn High School to the City Colleges—people are fighting back.
How can we defend our schools? Where are the attacks on public education coming from? How are they connected to other attacks, like the threat to lay off 1,000 CTA workers—and how is this part and parcel of a system set up to fund wars and tax cuts for the rich, but not jobs and education?
Join the International Socialist Organization for a forum to discuss these questions and to debate the next step in the fight for our schools.

Featuring: Sam Jordan (NEIU student solidarity organizer from NEIU Students for Faculty Rights); Jason Johnston (Chicago City Colleges Student Solidarity Committee); a Chicago Teachers Union Delegate and member of the Save Senn Coalition; a member of the Cook County College Teachers' Union at Chicago City Colleges; and a member of the University Professionals of Illinois at NEIU.

At 7 p.m. at the University of Illinois-Chicago, Chicago Circle Center, Room 605, 750 S. Halsted. Call 312-458-9380 or e-mail iso_loopbranch (at) yahoo.com for information.
