FBI confronts Peorian at traffic court

Saturday, November 6, 2004
PEKIN - A Peoria man who was due in Tazewell County court Friday for a traffic offense was arrested in front of the courthouse on an alleged immigration violation.

Mohammed A. Alalawneh, 47, of 4717 N. Knoxville Ave. arrived at the courthouse about 1 p.m. and was confronted by officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Pekin police and other police agencies.

Carl Rusnok, spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said the FBI had questions about Alalawneh's alleged ties with terrorists, but those have been "quickly dismissed."

"The FBI had some questions," Rusnok said. "I guess in this day and age, they have to investigate everything."

Alalawneh faces deportation to his home country of Jordan, Rusnok said. He had been granted a visitor's visa in 1995 that has since expired.

Alalawneh has been placed in custody, but Rusnok was unsure where he was being held. Alalawneh will go before an immigration judge within the next couple of days.

His Sept. 9 ticket for an operating an uninsured vehicle was dismissed Friday.
