Haymarket Monument dedication *tomorrow*

The new Haymarket monument will be dedicated tomorrow, September 14, near the intersection of Randolph and Desplaines Sts. at 11:30 AM. Be there to make sure the revolutionary spirit of the men murdered at Haymarket is not erased!

As announced previously, the city will be unveiling a new "free speech wagon" monument to commemorate the Haymarket Massacre tomorrow, September 14th, at 11:30 AM.

The announcement of this new monument has met a mixed response from local anarchists, anti-authoritarians, workers, and others concerned about the memory of the Haymarket Martyrs and what they fought for. On the one hand, the city is recognizing an event of international importance. This current attempt at recognition is better than nothing at all, and certainly better than the police statue that used to stand there (which was bombed twice before being moved away). But the A-word is still cautiously uttered, if it all. The men jailed and executed in the aftermath of the Haymarket riot are called "labor activists", "reformers", "alleged anarchists", and (the classic) "self-proclaimed anarchists". We know from the statements of the Haymarket martyrs themselves that they were dedicated anarchists, seeking not merely justice for workers, but an end to the capitalist system.

Members of the Chicagoland Anarchist Network and other concerned individuals will be at the dedication to ensure that the anarchism of the executed Haymarket martyrs is not erased. We will not allow the police, the city, clergy, or even labor unions to revise history and reduce them to mere "labor activists". CAN has made signs and other banners for the dedication. Thankfully, a speaker from the South Chicago Anarchist Black Cross will also be speaking at the event providing a radical viewpoint.

Please join us at the dedication! Bring noisemaking items, signs, and banners. Show up with a t-shirt with an anarchist or Haymarket theme, or just wear black. Most importantly, show up and make sure history is not revised to diminish and silence revolutionary voices!

To love the martyrs and hate their anarchism is complete hypocrisy!

Haymarket Monument dedication Tuesday, September 14th 11:30 AM (but show up early please) on Desplaines St., near intersection with Randolph St.

"The time will come when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today." -- August Spies to his executioners
