The Softer Side of Bush?

Do you believe in personal responsiblity, that actions speak louder than words, and that words really do mean something? Apparenly, the GOP faithful do not -- for while the Main Street Republicans are putting on a good show at the Convention, the Hard-Right are hitting the streets and getting their hands dirty...

Alan Keyes, the Maryland Republican seeking a U.S. Senate seat in Illinois, is coming under fire for comments about homosexuality. In an interview Monday night with a satellite radio station that provides programming targeting gays and lesbians, Keyes called homosexuality "selfish hedonism" and said Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter, Mary, is a sinner. Justice wants Detroit terror convictions thrown out
09/02/04
At the time of the convictions Mr. Ashcroft heralded them as sending a clear message that the United States would work diligently to disrupt and dismantle terrorist "sleeper cells" at home and abroad. The Chicago Tribune says the documents filed Wednesday by the government with the federal judge are filled with "blunt language more common to an attack on an opponent's case."

"In its best light, the record would show that the prosecution committed a pattern of mistakes and oversights that deprived the defendants of discoverable evidence ... and created a record filled with misleading inferences that such material did not exist," it states.

Barr is still open
09/02/04
Former Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia, a staunch conservative Republican, suggested yesterday that his concern over civil liberties issues raised in the Patriot Act might lead him to vote for a candidate other than President George W. Bush in November. "To me it's the most important issue on which I will be basing my vote in this election," Barr said at a forum about the controversial anti-terrorism law. The forum was sponsored jointly by the Arab American Institute and the American Conservative Union.

Conservative Christians rally for a 'culture war'
09/02/04
At an invitation-only Bush campaign rally, Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas urged conservative Christian supporters to "win this culture war" and called for a broad socially conservative agenda, including requirements that pregnant women considering abortions be offered anesthetics for their fetuses. Called the Family, Faith and Freedom Rally in e-mail invitations sent to Christian conservatives in New York for the convention, the event was organized by the Bush-Cheney campaign to "celebrate America and President George W. Bush," according to a copy of the invitation.

Pastor rips Muslims, loses polling sites
09/02/04
Cook County election officials are moving five polling sites out of a south suburban church whose pastor says all Muslims are either involved in terrorism or they are financial supporters of it. But the same pastor runs a church on Chicago's Southwest Side that continues to be home to three Chicago polling sites.

The Rev. Vernon Lyons, who runs Ashburn Baptist Church in Orland Park, makes no apologies for his comments, which came as he led an unsuccessful effort to keep a mosque out of Orland Park. County Clerk David Orr said several voters told him they were uncomfortable with the idea of going into Lyons' church to vote on Nov. 2, given his beliefs.
