THE LEGEND OF IRON MECHANIC
Reclusive
psychiatrist t.y. dreamt up the original Iron
Mechanic Bicycle Race with friends
"Octopussy" Wade and "Cookie" Gonzalez. Having studied
the secret arts
of croly-moly with Master Lee
Ravenscroft in the cramped Working Bikes basement on Cullerton, he
decided to sponsor a
race to show the world that
the mechanic
volunteers of the Working Bikes Cooperative
had the fastest wrenches in
Chicago. Retired bike couriers, bike shop professionals, talented amateurs, and
scallawags
competed against Working Bikes volunteers in the first ever
Iron Mechanic Bicycle Race,
putting together single speed
cruisers from scratch in a no-holds-barred race.
Working Bikes volunteer "Iron" Mike
Roeser walked away with the first prize.
