We are marching to ask, to demand, that the AFL union leaders support the workers and join the Million Worker March. This march exists to bring together all those struggling to make ends meet, to fight injustice, and to create justice. Some of our demands are: Universal healthcare for all. Progressive, increased taxes on corporations and the rich- lower taxes for working people. End the war on Iraq- bring the troops home, now. Outlaw discrimination of all kinds. For a national living wage and retirement benefits. Fund quality public education equally. AFL-CIO leader John Sweeney has written a non-binding letter urging all union bodies not to support this march. At the same time, hundreds of organizations across the country- including many unions and the largest one in the country- have endorsed and are actively working to make this march a success. We want to build long-lasting unity around our common program. If you agree with these goals, join us. If your organization agrees, bring your signs and speak out there with us. Saturday, August 28 - Poets Refuse To Be Censored During Chicago Poetry Fest. Eighty of the best writers in the City of Chicago will gather to celebrate freedom of speech at the 2004 Chicago Poetry Fest. Led by the Publisher of ChicagoPoetry.com, C. J. Laity--forty poets will take over Giddings Plaza, at the 4700 block of N. Lincoln Avenue, on Saturday, August 28, 2004, for a five hour free speech demonstration; and then another forty poets will meet at Weeds Tavern, 1555 N. Dayton, on Sunday, August 29. Both events will run from 3 until 8 PM, and both events are FREE to the public. C. J. Laity, who recently headlined the 20th Annual Printers Row Book Fair with his Chicago Poetry Showcase, is probably best known for his work with Poets Against the War. A poetry symposium was scheduled to take place in the White House on February 12, 2002, organized by Laura Bush. When Mrs. Bush learned that some of the poets who were scheduled to attend were planning on reading anti-war poems in the White House, she immediately canceled the symposium. Outraged by this act of censorship, poets organized thousands of poetry readings, that occurred simultaneously throughout the country on that day instead. Mr. Laity organized the Chicago Poets Against the War reading, which was broadcast live on the internet and which is archived at:

Sunday, August 29 – Thursday, September 4 – Protest the Republican National Convention in New York City. The Republican National Committee has, for the first time in their 150 year history, selected New York for their Convention. In a shallow attempt at exploiting the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the RNC has pushed the Convention date to September. We have witnessed two unjust wars, at least one American life lost each day overseas, a depressed economy, the collapse of the dollar, $87 billion to boost war profiteering, the closing of our firehouses, a health-care crisis, millions of children being left behind, and now this. When the vote does not place in power those who represent the will of the people, democracy must be taken to the streets. This administration's choice of New York City, historically known for its diverse population, its welcoming of immigrants from far off lands, and its radical politics will prove to be their biggest mistake yet. Emergency Response Plan to War & Racism
Sponsored by the Chicago Coalition Against War & Racism
1. If the U.S. starts another full scale war on another country besides Iraq, a protest will take place at 5 pm+ at the Federal Plaza, Adams & Dearborn Streets, Chicago, the day the bombing begins. There will be a larger follow up protest at the same time & place the day after.
2. In the event of a provocative attack on community leaders or organizations in the Chicago area, CCAWR has constructed a phone tree to mobilize the community to quickly protest the attack, whether at a police station, federal government office, or other appropriate place. To get on the Emergency Response phone tree / e-mail list and receive regular calendar updates such as this one, send your contact information to
