
Residents of Chicago's south side Woodlawn community are engaged in a pitched battle to resist a land grab that would benefit high-end development at the expense of long-term residents. The stakes are high, with the neighborhood's 61st Street business corrider -- a formerly thriving stretch of Black-owned businesses -- at risk.
The gentrification scheme is backed by 20th ward alderman Arenda Troutman and her boosters, including powerful developer Brinshore Development, LLC, which stands to profit from the redevelopment scheme -- and the displacement it would create.
