Friday, June 18 - Defend CAN TV!! Help promote "the Stone Bill" at the City of Chicago Committee on Finance meeting, 10 am, at City Hall, 118 N. LaSalle Street, 2nd floor. Alderman Bernard Stone recently introduced an ordinance that is designed to help safeguard CAN TV's future. It is very important that this pass, particularly in light of the RCN bankruptcy announced on May 27th. The ordinance provides for CAN TV to get one-fifth of the City's cable franchise fee. This would be added to funds from the cable operators that remain in the City, thereby stemming the loss from the failure of cable competition and allowing for future growth. At this meeting, the Aldermen will debate the issue and will vote to approve or reject the ordinance. Your presence is very important to assure that your alderman votes in support of the ordinance. If the ordinance passes, it will be forwarded to the full Council for a vote at the Wednesday, June 23, 2004 City Council meeting. Write your Alderman in support of the Stone Bill - info on how to do so if available at www.cityofchicago.org, or call CAN TV at 312.738.1400 or at their website, www.cantv.org/rcn

Saturday, June 19 - Protest Opponents of Gay Marriage at the Human Rights Campaign Fundraiser, 6:15 pm in front of the Hyatt Regency, 151 E. Wacker Drive (1 block east of Michigan). Howard Dean is in town to shill for presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee John Kerry, who says he is in FAVOR of an anti-gay amendment to the Massachusetts state constitution, effectively working to nix equal marriage rights for the one state in the country which has this right. Also on the dias will be Barack Obama, who says he is in favor of equal rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered people . . . but is opposed to gay marriage, saying that civil unions is good enough. This man, who is a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago, has the chutzpah to pretend that "separate but equal" marriage-like institutions are good for enough for gay people. For more info on the issue of Democrats who "support" us while stabbing us in the back, go to www.washblade.com/2004/5-14/view/columns/astro.cfm Protest sponsored by the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network. Based solely on the faulty fingerprint match, authorities jailed Mayfield without charges, leaked false information linking him to the bombings, and confused and terrified him and his family. His ordeal ended only after Spanish authorities determined the print matched those of an Algerian man, not Mayfield. An Oregon lawyer, Mayfield was arrested on May 6 and held for fourteen days, when FBI matched his fingerprint to one found on a bag of detonators used in the March 11th bombing in Madrid, Spain. The emphasis was placed on the singer/songwriter, along with groups who wrote and played their own music. As the African American liberation movements were crushed and co-opted, the documentary will trace the death of pure soul music, replaced by watered down R&B disco music promoted by capitalistic conglomerates of the recording industry. This presentation will show footage of artists such as Ed Winstarr, The Honey Cone, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Rufus with Chaka Khan, Chic, and Roberta Flack. 4 pm, New World Resource Center 1300 N. Featuring interviews with over 20 experts about the reasons we were given for war and the evidence presented to support those reasons. 7 pm, “Store Wars: When Wal-Mart Comes to Town.” This film takes a look at the populist spirit that engulfs a small Virginia town when retail giant Wal-Mart comes knocking, blue-prints in hand. The ensuing debate, which pits neighbor against neighbor, illustrates the struggle between conflicting versions of the American dream. Join us as we say NO to assimilation and YES to queer liberation! 9:30 am, meet at the corner of Lawrence and Broadway in Uptown (off the Lawrence Redline stop of the "L"). 10 am, March south on Broadway through Uptown, detour into the notoriously homophobic Wriglyville neighborhood and then on into Boystown. 11:30 am, gather in the Petco parking lot at the corner of Halsted, Clark and Barry. 12 noon, march as an anarchist contingent in the annual "pride" parade. We have so much to celebrate as queer anarchists this June 27th. The 35th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, Emma Goldman's birthday, the IWW was founded on this weekend nearly 100 years ago, and that bastard Reagan is finally dead! Unfortunately we also have a lot to be angry about: the war on Iraq, the violation of our civil liberties, the threat to a woman's right to choose, prison torture in Abu Ghraib, Guadalajara and Cook County, the police murder of anti-police brutality activist May Molina, and the homophobic and AIDSphobic policies of the commander-in-thief, George W. Bush. We're inviting all anarchists, anti-authoritarians and autonomous individuals to join us for an exciting reclaiming of Pride Day. We need your bodies: queers, trannys, dykes, fags, radical fairies, genderqueers, bisexuals, pansexuals, omnisexuals, interesexed, heteroflexables, bicurious, questioning, significant others, friends, family and allies!
