Wednesday, June 30 – A TASTE OF DEMOCRACY? Today the Bush Administration claims it will turn over power to an Iraqi government. This government will be a puppet regime without any real power because the U.S. Government has little intention of relinquishing control over Iraq or its oil. There is no simple solution to this war. It is clear that the Iraqi people do not want U.S. troops there and the occupation is only making the situation worse. We say let the Iraqi people decide. Bring the troops home now! STOP THE WAR!! TROOPS OUT NOW!! Location: 5 pm, Michigan Avenue just south of Congress Pkwy. Friday, June 11 - Rescuing Historical Memory: Video Showing Viet Nam "The Battle of Dien Bien Phu." On May 7, 1954, the Vietnamese people defeated their French occupiers at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. This battle marked not only the decisive defeat of French colonialism in Vietnam, but also a turning point in the development of people's struggles around the world. This battle marked the moment when people around the world realized that their power can overcome the economic power of imperialism and the technology of its armies. Finally, as the French retreated, a younger imperial power, the United States, began its intervention in Viet Nam - an intervention that ended with another victory for the people. Join us for a (belated) commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu. We will watch a 45 minute video called "The Battle of Dien Bien Phu" with lots of great, rare footage from the Vietnamese people's struggle and then have an open-ended discussion on the video and the event itself. 7:30 pm, June 11, Che Cafe 1058 West Taylor St. Info 312.850.4665 or enelojo (at) rojo.net

Saturday, June 12 - Pueblo Sin Fronteras presents The Annual Rudy Lozano Dinner at Latin Rythms, 2501 S. Western Avenue, 6:30 pm. Pueblo Sin Fronteras invites you to the annual Rudy Lozano Dinner. The keynote speaker for the dinner this year is Congressman Luis Gutierrez, who will give an update on the struggle for legalization. This year's dinner will be a working dinner for those who want to volunteer in or support our upcoming Familia Latina Unida campaign. The theme of the Familia Latina Unida campaign is that those that can vote must vote for the whole Pueblo - with and without papers. The aim is to send a signal to the Latino community that our voice must be heard in this next election and we have chosen a pueblo sin fronteras way to send that signal. You do not have to be a citizen to participate in this campaign. We are also stressing the unity between the Puerto Rican and Mexican community in this campaign. Remember, those who live on the Island of Vieques, suffering from the damage done to their homeland by the U.S. military, are citizens but cannot vote for the President of the United States who will decide the future of their island. $25 donation is requested for each dinner ticket. Fax 312.666.7504 or call 773.671.1727 or 773.671.1798 to reserve your ticket.

Friday, June 18 - Defend CAN TV!! Help promote "the Stone Bill" at the City of Chicago Committee on Finance meeting, 10 am, at City Hall, 118 N. LaSalle Street, 2nd floor. Alderman Bernard Stone recently introduced an ordinance that is designed to help safeguard CAN TV's future. It is very important that this pass, particularly in light of the RCN bankruptcy announced on May 27th. The ordinance provides for CAN TV to get one-fifth of the City's cable franchise fee. This would be added to funds from the cable operators that remain in the City, thereby stemming the loss from the failure of cable competition and allowing for future growth. At this meeting, the Aldermen will debate the issue and will vote to approve or reject the ordinance. Your presence is very important to assure that your alderman votes in support of the ordinance. If the ordinance passes, it will be forwarded to the full Council for a vote at the Wednesday, June 23, 2004 City Council meeting. Write your Alderman in support of the Stone Bill - info on how to do so if available at www.cityofchicago.org, or call CAN TV at 312.738.1400 or at their website, www.cantv.org/rcn

Saturday, June 19 - Protest Opponents of Gay Marriage at the Human Rights Campaign Fundraiser, 6:15 pm in front of the Hyatt Regency, 151 E. Wacker Drive (1 block east of Michigan). Howard Dean is in town to shill for presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee John Kerry, who says he is in FAVOR of an anti-gay amendment to the Massachusetts state constitution, effectively working to nix equal marriage rights for the one state in the country which has this right. Also on the dias will be Barack Obama, who says he is in favor of equal rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered people . . . but is opposed to gay marriage, saying that civil unions is good enough. This man, who is a professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago, has the chutzpah to pretend that "separate but equal" marriage-like institutions are good for enough for gay people. Featuring interviews with over 20 experts about the reasons we were given for war and the evidence presented to support those reasons. 7 pm, “Store Wars: When Wal-Mart Comes to Town.” This film takes a look at the populist spirit that engulfs a small Virginia town when retail giant Wal-Mart comes knocking, blue-prints in hand. The ensuing debate, which pits neighbor against neighbor, illustrates the struggle between conflicting versions of the American dream.
