Two commuter trains collided on the city's el tracks during the evening rush hour Tuesday, causing minor injuries to 45 people.
Many of the injured complained of neck and back pain, and they were transported in fair and good condition. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
The trains were headed north in the city's downtown when one ran into the back of the other. The impact shattered windows on the train cars and threw passengers to the floor.
CTA claims that because the trains were traveling along a curve at the time they likely were not traveling very fast.
Rescue workers erected ladders from the sidewalk to the tracks to help passengers evacuate from the dimly lit, unheated cars. The rescue lasted nearly three hours.
