The North Suburban Peace Initiative invites you to a lecture and forum featuring world renowned nuclear weapons expert, Dr. Helen Caldicott. Dr. Caldicott has studied the influential role nuclear weapons have played in forming U.S. foreign policy. Over the past forty years, the historical principle has been that nuclear weapons serve as a deterrent to aggression, and not as useable battlefield weapons. However, the present U.S. administration has a dramatically different view of nuclear weapons and is now actively pursuing new nuclear weapons that are explicitly for use on the battlefield. These tactical nuclear weapons turn the notion of strategic deterrence on its head and create a world in which nuclear weapons are seen as a legitimate offensive alternative. This is major departure from where we were as a country only a few years ago, a departure that deserves serious debate.
Dr. Caldicott's goal is to educate, alert, and mobilize millions of concerned citizens, who must understand the planetary threat posed by an aggressive nuclear policy. Dr. Caldicott, as a physician, enumerates the medical consequences of a nuclear war. Caldicott demonstrates that the notion of nuclear survival is a complete fantasy and that nuclear victory is an oxymoron. Her latest book: The New Nuclear Danger will be available for purchase at the event courtesy of The BookStall, Chestnut Court, Winnetka.
