The cooperative is made up of 33 families of ex-combatants from the Guatemalan Revolutionary Unity or URNG. The URNG was Guatemala's resistance movement that forced the Guatemalan army to negotiate an end to that country's 36-year civil war. Santa Anita is not just any organic, fair-trade certified, cooperative. Santa Anita la Union is the coop of Guatemala's future. The cooperative's values reflect the society the URNG struggled for 36 years to create. Now they are leading by example... the coop has a "no-kill" policy, where no animal within it's confines can be killed, their board of directors has to be composed of at least 50% women at all times, they have a free-education, free-healthcare for all policy, and they are completely 100% environmentally-friendly.
