Neighbors for Peace presents "On Orientalism" with Edward Said

Sunday, January 11, 2004 2:00 p.m.

Evanston Public Library Small meeting room

We invite you to attend a video presentation with the late scholar, Edward Said, discussing his book "Orientalism" which was published
in 1977. Mr. Said was videotaped in 1997 commenting on how the book continues to be relevant in current times. It shows how western
cultures have accepted a bias against eastern and mid-eastern cultures and contributed toward the present attitude of the United States government unbalanced stance in regard to Israel and its Arab neighbors. Professor Sol Jhally introduces the video and has some commentary at several points. Attendees are invited to participate in the discussion period following the video. This event is free and open to the public.

Edward Said was regarded as one of the most articulate and visible advocates of the Palestinian cause in the U.S. at the time of his
death in September. After completing
"Orientalism" he wrote two more books analyzing the issue of Israel and the Palestinians: "The Question of Palestine", 1979 and "Covering Islam", 1981.

Neighbors for Peace is an Evanston based group of grassroots peace activists who meet weekly at the St. Nicholas social hall, 806 Ridge
Ave, at 7:30 p.m.
