In what may be a protest unprecedented of its kind, twenty members of the Congress Hotel workers were arrested in an action of civil disobedience. The strikers, sitting in the pouring rain, briefly blocked Michigan Avenue before Chicago police placed them under arrest.
The goal of the action was to escalate the stakes of the Congress Hotel strike, which entered its 12th week with the coming of Labor Day. The strikers have been struggling for a living wage won by other Chicago hotel workers; on June 15, management imposed a 7% across-the-board wage cut and gutted benefits.
