
Dozens of Little Village residents protested at Chicago Mayor Richie Daley's office Wednesday afternoon to demand that Daley back community efforts to curtail pollution from two coal-burning power plants in the area. Residents charge that Daley has deliberately blocked legislation that would clean up much of the pollution eminating from the plants. Dozens of deaths and thousands of asthma attacks can be attributed to the two coal plants each year, say researchers, who also argue that mercury from the plants is polluting area fish in Lake Michigan and local rivers and lagoons.
