EMERGENCY REGIONAL MOBILIZATION: 12 noon, Saturday, Jan. 11 -- Federal Plaza, Chicago (Adams & Dearborn Streets) -- pdf flyer attached -- call or e-mail to endorse
The last U.S. war killed over 100,000 people, and up to 1 million more have died due to continuing U.S.-led sanctions. With the massing of U.S. troops and escalating threats from the Bush administration, it is clear that a devastating new war is but a pretext away.
The Administration claims war is necessary to stop Saddam Hussein from using weapons of mass destruction, yet with the U.S. military budget almost equal to that of the rest of the world combined, it is absurd to suggest that Iraq poses a serious threat to the United States. With troops in over 100 countries around the world, U.S. "aid" is already playing a devastating role in Palestine, the Philippines, Colombia and other countries.
The threat of war abroad is being matched by a war at home: Arabs, Muslims, Latinos and immigrants are receiving the brunt of sweeping attacks on all of our civil rights, which are being sacrificed to whip up a pro-war hysteria. The freedom to oppose the policies of this government is under the severest assault since the repression of the movements of the 1960s. The living standards of working people and oppressed communities are under direct attack, and many social programs cut during the current recession will be further gutted if the Administration diverts hundreds of billions more to spend on a war and occupation of Iraq. We say no more!
