Powder outside zoo deemed harmless

CHICAGO, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The discovery of a white powder outside Lincoln Park Zoo prompted police to cordon off the area shortly before noon Tuesday but within hours experts declared the substance harmless.

Numerous streets were closed off in the trendy North Side neighborhood and asked high-rise dwellers to stay indoors as hazardous materials teams collected the powder and tested it.

The powder was noticed by an employee of the Lincoln Park Conservatory, who alerted police.

Fire Commissioner James Joyce said the substance appeared to be chalk or powder used to mark a jogging route.
