Cross-Country Walker in Chicago
Seattle activist en route (en foot!) to the White House visits Windy City for the first time
WTO veteran Jeanette Wallis has been collecting "grievances" (hand-written letters) for President Bush since his first day in office nearly two years ago. Inspired by Doris "Granny D." Haddock, she left Seattle on foot April 1st, 2001, vowing to walk nearly 5,000 miles - collecting and carrying the messages of the people to the White House. Upon her expected arrival this Spring, she hopes to present these letters to George W. Bush and request their redress. It's what she calls a "literal interpretation of the First Amendment", and she's in Chicago for a few days to meet with folks and spread her message of hope and courage despite all manner of obstacles. Check out her website at
www.thewalkfordemocracy.org for more info on the walk, a sampling of some of the grievances she's received, photos, media coverage, and much more.
If you or your organization would like to help Jeanette and her canine companion (even to simply show her the town!), please send an e-mail to the address above. Media contacts especially needed! Anarchists & Rank and File Labor especially adored!
