Members of the Roger's Park Wellington United Church of Christ made a presence in the cold of Saturday to collect over 200 signatures for the Iraq Peace Pledge. Taking up all four corners of the busy intersection of Wellington and Broadway the modest group of about 12 recieved a generally positive response, though there were more than a few "I support the war" rebuttals. Many people though were happy to have a place to voice their dissent. Two sixth graders from the neighborhood, Johnny and Conner happened on the petitioners and had a bit of fun giving away bumper stickers stating No War In Iraq.
The Wellington UCC is one of many rapidly growing faith-based groups to come out against the war. This progressive response only goes along with the historic traditions of the denomination however, being open to the Gay Lesbian Bisexual community, opposing the death penalty, and other issues. The Wellington congregation has been near unanimous in their opposition to the war on Iraq. One member also participated in a sit-in during a rally at Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert's office in Batavia this past October during the Congressional debates on the war powers resolution concerning Iraq.
