As I stepped out from the blue line station, I was slightly shocked to see a few cops in riot gear. As I walked down street after street, cops in riot gear guarded every inch of sidewalk. Lines of cops were guarding lines of cops. Helicopters circled the Boeing headquarters. Mounted police were trying to keep their horses from bucking. If anything, the most likely injury at this protest would have consisted of someone ending up with a hoof in his or her face; Either that or being hit by debris thrown by the few observers on Boeing’s roof buildings.
Police presence was astounding, matching, or more likely, outnumbering protestors. From teamsters, to pink clad dancers, a variety of people came out to protest. Police lined the streets, denying protestors access to and from the public sidewalk. One police officer pushed me into a horse as I tried to move.
How many police were there? Too many! The question I am most interested in, however, is the expense of all this. Not just the astounding police presence (in Chicago’s history), but also the street cleaners that had to follow up from the horses’ constant relief.
My interests lye in photography more than writing, so here are photos that were in desperate need of a stronger flash.
