F. David Radler, publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times and Chairman of the Board of the Jerusalem Post, is being honored at a dinner this Sunday evening by the Weizmann Institute for Science for his alleged role in "telling the truth about Israel," etc. The honorary chairman and toastmaster of the event is Bill Daley, chief fixer in the Democratic Party here and nationally. The guest speaker is Donald Trump, a personification if the sort of greed and megalomania of the 1980s and '90s from which the country is now attempting to recover (Irv Kupcinet will be there as iconic adornment).

Even a casual reader of the Sun-Times cannot help but notice that aside from voluminous and unremitting sports coverage, the other main theme of Chicago's formerly liberal second newspaper is shameless cheerleading of America's pampered and brutal client state in the Middle East. The Sun-Times is little more than a semi-official mouthpiece of the most reactionary elements in Israeli politics, who have now joined with the Christian hard right and the Bush administration to champion the final pulverization of Palestinian society in the Occupied West Bank and Gaza and a naked Pax Americana throughout the Middle East. (Needless to say, the Sun-Times has also been in the forefront of the jingoist chorus for an immediate assault on Iraq whatever the consequences.)

At a time when health, education, environmental clean-up and socially useful employment ought to be the primary concern of our national and local leaders, they instead celebrate the worst aspects of an openly apartheid state whose massive crimes are a major source of instability and violence in the world today.
