Thousands To Rally In Chicago To Demand Refugees' Right To Return

On 29 September 2002, thousands of Palestinians and people of conscience will take part in a march and rally to demand implementation of the right of Palestinian refugees to return to homes and lands from which they were expelled.

March will begin at 10am from the Israeli Consulate and continue to Federal Plaza, where the rally will take place. Protestors will call for an end to five decades of exile and demand that Palestinian refugees be permitted to return to their homes and properties of origin.

Organizers intend to draw the public's attention to the human rights abuses and suffering inflicted with impunity upon the Palestinian people, by the Israeli apartheid regime. They also plan to send a strong signal of support to Palestinians in all territories occupied since 1948 and 1967. Since September of 2000 over 1,700 Palestinian civilians have been killed, and over 20,000 injured. Many of those killed and injured are children.

The September 29 rally will add the voice of concerned Chicagoans and people from around the nation to the international outrage at the gross human rights abuses inflicted on the Palestinian people. This event, spearheaded by Al-Awda, The Palestinian Right To Return Coalition, is co-sponsored and endorsed by dozens of individuals and organizations.

Palestinian refugees represent one of the oldest and largest refugee populations in the world. Their suffering is magnified by Israel’s ongoing denial of their right to repatriation and restitution, as required by international law and UN resolution 194.

The rally will consist of a number of speakers from national and Chicago based groups of conscience, as well as musicians, poets, and performers.
