- About Dr. Azmi Bishara

Dr. Azmi Bishara has been a member of the Israeli Knesset since 1996, where he has been an outspoken advocate for more than one million Palestinians - nearly 20% of the population -- who live within the state of Israel. The philosophy professor founded the National Democratic Assembly, the progressive political party of the Palestinian citizens of Israel.

In an unprecedented move last November, the Knesset's House Committee voted to revoke Dr. Bishara's parliamentary immunity because of his outspoken views regarding Israeli occupation of Palestine and his efforts to reunite Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel with their relatives living in Syrian refugee camps.

Dr. Bishara has argued that equality in Israel rests upon the separation of state and religion, and has called for the transformation of Israel from an apartheid society into a truly democratic state that recognizes and legally enshrines equal rights for all of its citizens - Jewish and Arab. He is now facing two trials in Israel in the wake of his advocacy for Palestinians.
