Chicago Equal Marriage Now Campaign Escalates with Banner Drop, Direct Action Lockdown

In a week which saw the state of Massachusetts grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples, a group of Chicago activists galvanized efforts this week to bring the same civil rights to same-sex couples in Illinois.

On Monday, organizers raise the stakes in this civil rights campaign directly at the city's Marriage License Bureau in the form of a banner drop, accompanied by a rally and physical blockade of the Bureau itself. Four activists were arrested for blocking the counters at the Bureau; all four were released later that afternoon.
