LOCAL: CIVIL LIBERTIES: Family, Friends to Rally for Chicago Men Charged With Terrorism

Two of the four men arrested by the U.S. government on Thursday for terrorism -- Ghassan Ballut and Hatem Fariz -- have close ties to Chicago's Palestinian community. All four have flatly denied the charges. Read more.

Family and friends of Ballut and Fariz will hold a community meeting today -- Sunday -- to discuss the case and rally support. Local activists have charged that those arrested are being singled out for opposing Israeli occupation of Palestine, as part of a broad campaign to suppress dissent and opposition to U.S. foreign policy as the Bush administration moves toward full-scale war on Iraq. They argue that the arrests may represent the fedsí opening volley in a sweeping attack on Palestinian solidarity work among both Arab Americans and North Americans.
