LOCAL MEDIA: Local Cable Giant Refuses to Pay up

Public access to the airwaves is vital to a functioning radical democracy. One such node of access is Chicago's cable access network, CAN-TV . Part of CAN-TV's funding comes from access fees paid by cable company giants as part of licensing agreements to the city of Chicago. RCN cable company is trying to renege on paying the public access channel $645,000 that it promised - one quarter of CAN TV's annual funding. That move threatens the organization's ability to help local groups produce their own content. Activists will be heating things up at the next meeting of the Chicago Cable Commission on Wed.
