MAYDAY: Carnival Against Capitalism Celebrates Chicago as Birthplace of Mayday

Seeking to reclaim Mayday for Chicago—where the historic labor holiday began with the Haymarket riots of 1896—local activists organized a weekend of resistance, which culminated Sunday with a Carnival Against Capitalism. Despite cold, damp weather, a festive and carnivalesque atmosphere prevailed as an estimated 150 people paraded through the Little Village and Pilsen neighborhoods on Chicago's South Side. Initiated by the Chicago Direct Action Network, the weekend's three-day series of workshops, parties, and protest attracted activists from states around the Midwest region including Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, as well as groups from as far away as Florida and Mexico.

The weekend kicked off on Friday evening with Chicago's largest-ever Critical Mass bike ride, in which over 400 cyclists took over the streets of Chicago's Loop during rush hour to protest the culture of car-dependency.

Saturday featured a day-long conference titled "From Local to Global: the Midwest on Fire," in which activists shared skills and ideas in workshops whose topics ranged from immigrant rights to patriarchy in the movement, from Mayday history to ecology and globalization.
