From GERMANY- Two weeks ago a Pakistani terrorist group claimed responsibility for the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers in Kashmir. This week the Indian military bombed what they said was a terrorist camp in Pakistan, and the Pakistan military replied by shooting down 2 Indian jets. This is the highest level of tension between the two nuclear armed countries in decades.

From SPAIN- Justin Coe reports on the rise of right-wing political parties in Spain, where a snap election will be held in April. In the Catalan region riot police clashed with pro-independence people protesting the ongoing trials of 12 separatist leaders. The Spanish government presented a draft proposal on how to tackle climate change, with plans to make Spain carbon neutral by the year 2050- under the proposal all new cars would need to be emission free by 2040.

From CUBA- Cubans overwhelming ratified their new constitution, with 86% of the votes cast in favor of the new magna carta. Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, issued a press statement questioning the validity of the Cuban referendum- the Cuban Foreign Ministry called the remarks an expression of imperialist ideology and the return of the Monroe Doctrine. Mike Pence met with Juan Guiado, self-proclaimed president of Venezuela, announcing new sanctions against Venezuelans and reiterating that all options for intervention remained on the table- the Lima group insisted on a democratic transition of power. The US requested a second urgent session at the UN to discuss Venezuela’s internal political situation. Activist Roger Waters has called for the liberation of former Brazilian president Lula da Silva.

From JAPAN- Okinawa residents passed a referendum to stop a landfill project to relocate a US marine air base. Two US naval vessels passed through the Taiwan straits in a show of force, to keep China in check. A UN report says that in Afghanistan more than 3800 civilians were killed in fighting between US coalition forces and the Taliban- the US has conducted military activities in Afghanistan for more than 17 years.

"Our civilization is being sacrificed for the opportunity of a very small number of people to continue making enormous amounts of money. It is the sufferings of the many which pay for the luxuries of the few. You say you love your children above all else, and yet you are stealing their future in front of their very eyes."
--Greta Thunberg, 15
