Illinois Handmaids Thank Governor Rauner For Signing HB 40

Handmaids caution they will remain vigilant

CHICAGO — This summer women from communities across Illinois, dressed in the distinctive red capes and bonnets of the Handmaids from the Margaret Atwood book and Emmy award winning series, “The Handmaids Tale,” gathered to deliver an important message to Governor Bruce Rauner: Sign HB 40 and stand up for reproductive rights for Illinois women.

Today, The Illinois Handmaids would like to thank Governor Rauner for signing HB 40 into Illinois law, thereby honoring his campaign promise to guarantee access to reproductive health care to all women, regardless of income level or location of residence.

The Handmaid’s Tale, while set in a dystopian future, feels all too real with the recent activity designed to limit women’s reproductive rights by Republican lawmakers. The Illinois Handmaids are thankful for this important step in protecting health care for women, but our work is not done and we will be vigilant: Our eyes are everywhere.
