Dear Radio Friend,
This week's show features stories from NHK World Radio Japan, Spanish National Radio, Radio Havana Cuba, and Sputnik Radio.

From JAPAN- Journalists witnessed the dismantling of a North Korean nuclear test site- the North threatened to skip the summit with Trump after VP Pence said military attacks on the North were not ruled out.- some hours later Trump announced he was canceling the summit. The Japanese nuclear regulatory agency reported leaks at 7 nuclear plants, but said they posed no danger. Palestine has become a member of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons- the Palestinian Authority has asked the International Criminal Court to investigate the massacre of scores of civilians by Israeli troops last week.

From SPAIN- Alison Hughes begins in Catalan where Quim Torra was recognized as leader by Madrid, but then the central government said it would continue direct rule because Quim chose 4 cabinet members who are either in prison or living in exile. Alison then presented the reactions from the Spanish press. Italy will likely have a government led by a right-wing populist coalition of the former Northern League and the 5 Star Movement- anti-EU sentiment and mass deportation of illegal immigrants are cornerstones of the coalition. The re-election of Maduro as President in Venezuela was no surprise, but the international calls to not recognize the results were. US VP Pence dismissed the election before the voting began, and the global division of opinion is stunning. Former Spanish President Zapatero was critical of the reactions.

From CUBA- Cuba was pleased by Maduro's victory in Venezuela and his commitment to increasing dialogue. Imprisoned former Brazilian President Lula da Silva is leading in polls for the election in October. Argentina is in a financial crisis and President Macri has asked the IMF for a $30 billion loan, which will surely come with IMF conditions. 300 Israeli settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque in Israeli occupied east Jerusalem.

From RUSSIA- Afshin Rattansi reported on the 7th anniversary of US, British and French bombing of Libya which led to the collapse of the country, where African migrant slave auctions are currently happening. Edward Snowden criticized the selection of Gina Haspel to lead the CIA.

"We have to re-invent socialism. It can't be the kind of socialism that we saw in the Soviet Union, but it will emerge as we develop new systems that are built on cooperation, not competition,"
