WHY:

* Despite reporting nearly an 80% reduction in school-based violence since
partnering with ICHV on the Student Voices Activist Institute for nearly
five years and other violence prevention programs, Henderson Elementary
reports having to lockdown the school or cancel recess at least once per
month to protect its 350 pre-k to 8th grade students from outside
shootings within a block of the school – and sometimes even on school grounds.
* In recent months, the school was rocked by the shooting injury of
three-year-old child, Ayden Deer, one block from the school and the tragic
shooting death of 8th grade student, J’Quantae Jiles, only months after
moving back to the community with his family.
* Henderson has the longest-running ICHV Activist Institute Program, which has
trained more than 500 youth to empower their voices against violence in
their communities. The 80 students currently enrolled in the program have
entirely led and organized this march as part of the program, and have
invited the grandmother of Ayden Deer so that they may issue a “Get Well
Card” to the child, as well as Franika Marshall to speak to the community in
remembrance of her son, J’Quantae Jiles and to join them in calling for peace.
