Cuban LGBT Activist to Tour Chicago

Cuban LGBT activist Alberto Roque Guerra will visit Chicago with media appearances and a 7 PM, Tuesday, September 1st public meeting at Nookies Restaurant, 3334 N. Halsted Street, co-sponsored by the Gay Liberation Network and the Chicago ALBA Solidarity Committee.

Like the United States, Cuba has had both low points and high points in the history of LGBT rights.

In Cuba's case, the imprisonment of people with AIDS early in the epidemic and the Mariel boat lift were low points. High points include being one of a handful of countries in the world that gives free gender assignment surgery forTransgender people.

Dr. Roque Guerra is a widely published activist on gender theories, sexualities, biopolitics, bioethics, & biomedical,cultural and political aspects of trans identities. He has taught at the university level for six years.

He is a founder and coordinator (2010-1012) of the group "Hombres por la Diversidad," an educational and advocacy group related to the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX),where he has worked with Mariela Castro, daughter of President Raul Castro, in Havana.

His published books include Sexual Diversity in Cuba: A Human Rights Overview, Biological Aspects of Transsexualism, and Sexual Hormones and Its Use in Transsexualism.
