A Chicago Indymedia journalist was one of two people arrested this week in Houston, Texas, at a protest against the Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline.

"EJ", a contributor to Chicago Independent Television (Chicago Indymedia's monthly television series), was in Houston and observed a protest organized by the group Tar Sands Blockade. At least 50 people attended the protest, which took place on Monday, January 7, in Houston, Texas, outside the U.S. headquarters of the oil giant TransCanada.

"EJ" and a fellow arrestee who goes by the name "Climate Hawk" were released from custody on Wednesday, January 9th.

The 300-mile-long Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline would transport oil produced from the Athabascan oil sands from Alberta, Canada, south through the United States to refineries in Texas. Activists from across North America have raised environmental and other concerns about the pipeline.

Critical among those concerns is that the pipeline, serving as a gateway for extremely energy-intensive oil extraction efforts from Canadian tar sands. Those efforts would serve as the "fuse" to the most potent "carbon bomb" on Earth, accelerating the chances for a runaway greenhouse effect that would irreparably damage Earth's climate. The pipeline has drawn protests from environmentalists and allies in the past year.
